HAVING a “signature walk” has always been important in pageants.

It sets a candidate apart from co-competitors in the eyes of the judges and audiences inasmuch as it highlights poise and confidence.

Filipina beauty queens usually have a name for their pasarela walk.

If Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj has her “Pilapil walk,” Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup owns “Tsunami walk.”

Then there’s “Cobra walk” for Miss Universe 2012 1st runner-up Janine Tugonon, “Arriba walk” for Miss Universe 2013 3rd runner-up Ariella Arida, and “Camel Walk” for Miss Universe-Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa.

Of course, who would forget Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach’s “Tanim-bala walk?”

How about “Alta walk” for Miss Universe-Philippines 2016 Maxine Medina and “Infinity walk” for Miss Universe-Philippines 2017 Rachel Peters?

Now that Miss Universe season is right around the corner, it’s time to get to know Catriona Gray’s – our country’s representative to the prestigious pageant this year – signature (and hopefully, winning) walk.

In a video released by dancer and choreographer Carlos Buendia Jr, Catriona is seen practicing a walk they call, “Lava walk.” It was accompanied by a caption: “Glide, Sway, Pivot and Erupt!”

The name is said to be related to Catriona’s Bicolano roots. It symbolizes the dainty daragang magayon and her affinity with the majestic Mayon volcano.  (REGS PARUNGAO)
