The odds are out for the Nov. 5 world welterweight war between Sen. Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas and the numbers are staggering in the Filipino’s favor.
Three weeks before the two fighters formally announce their scheduled 12-round duel at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Pacquiao was listed as -1000 ($1,000 wager wins $100) and Vargas +550 ($100 bet wins $550).
Oddsmakers remain upbeat that Pacquiao has all the tools needed to spoil Vargas as ring rust won’t even be a factor in their much-awaited showdown in Sin City.
The last time Pacquiao fought was in April, a rousing win over Tim Bradley, a performance ringsiders feel is enough proof that he remains a force to be reckoned with in the 147-lb division.
Meanwhile, Vargas insists he has mastered fighting left-handers through the years that Pacquiao won’t be like no other southpaw he has faced and beaten.
In racking up a 27-1-0 win-loss-draw record with ten KOs, Vargas maintains that he is not bothered by lefties as he looks forward to an eye-popping win.
“You still haven’t seen the best that I have to offer,” Vargas told boxingscene over the weekend.
In 2014 alone, Vargas fought and defeated three left-handers: Russians Khabib Allakhverdiev and Anton Novikov and Mexican Antonio DeMarco.
“It has helped me a lot not only that but we have several times prepared for it.
We have long-term sparring partners that will help me prepare for but definitely those experiences will help me prepare for it,” Vargas said.
Fighting out of Las Vegas, the 27-year-old Vargas has kicked off training under a new tactician in Dewey Cooper, a former Muay and MMA fighter.
Pacquiao, who turns 38 in December, went jogging last Saturday afternoon but won’t be reporting for training camp until his return from a quick promotional trip to Los Angeles on Sept. 8.
A professional since 1995, Pacquiao enters the Vargas fight with a 58-6-2 mark with 38 KOs.
